The Great January Festival of Chiapa de Corzo has its origins in the legend of María de Ángulo and the waters of El Cumbujuyú, a place with sulfurous and very cool waters in the municipality of Emiliano Zapata, and which now gathers thousands around the dances of the chiapaneca, the chuntá and the parachico.

During the years 1767 and 1768, a plague struck Chiapa de Corzo that destroyed crops of corn, beans, wheat and legumes, caused a famine and during 1770 an epidemic that caused the death of people, upon being aware of this reality, María de Angulo He returned to Chiapa de Corzo, distributed groceries: corn, beans, fruits, vegetables, and money. In the afternoons, servants and servants danced for the amusement of the children.

Doña María de Angulo was a beautiful, wealthy, Catholic Spanish lady, she lived in Guatemala and arrived in Chiapa de Corzo in the middle of the 18th century in search of relief for her little son who was sick, a healer from the area took the child to the curative waters of Cumbujuyú and after bathing he was cured of his ills.
