Sump Legend.
This is one of the most interesting. It deals with the fierce struggle of the indigenous people of Chiapas to oppose the conquerors; so much so that they preferred collective suicide to submission, the above as an act of honor.
This story tells that the Spanish Luis Marín came to subdue the town called Nandalumí (today Pueblo Grande) in 1524. However, the inhabitants returned to their customs in an attitude of defiance.
Then, under the command of Diego de Mazariegos, the heavily armed Spaniards returned to subdue the town; The last battle was fought in the Tepechtía Rock of the Sumidero Canyon. However, the locals say that the Spanish did not kill the natives, but entire families threw themselves off the cliff. It is said that the Spanish captain ceased the combat because he was moved to see so many people willingly go to their deaths rather than be subdued. The town that was later founded with the few remaining inhabitants would be the current San Cristóbal de las Casas.
