Legend of the Negro and the church of Chamula.
If by itself the people of San Juan Chamula and their syncretic customs are eccentric, this legend adds even more of this ingredient. Until today the Chamulas maintain their own political organization, they do not allow any white man to build his house in the town and they are very jealous of their customs.
The story about the construction of its church, where its magnetic rituals that combine the Catholic faith and magic are performed, is very special, according to legend. As expected, when the Spanish came to dominate these lands in 1924, the Chamulas continued with their customs and refused to allow a church to be built.
A chapter changed the opinion of the inhabitants when a black man with a reputation as a shaman and having powers with the ability to annihilate his enemies began to alarm the population. The influence of this character, despite not being Chamula, was becoming very strong.
The Chamulas believed that this was perhaps happening precisely because they did not have a church. Then the inhabitants asked this magician to indicate the place where the church should be built, as a kind of reverence. Then the black on a pedestal 40 m from the main door where the church is today stood up. He turned around whistling and it happened that from afar, leaving everyone astonished, came stones that were turning into rams, the group of animals remained next to the black one and they seemed to understand each other, then they turned back into stones. There were some rocks that did not come and the angry black called them Chajancavitz, which means El Cerro de las Piedras Haraganas. This mound of rebel rocks are the ones that pose to the left of the road, a little before reaching Chamula.
