Toniná is an important Mesoamerican archaeological site located in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. It is located about 12 kilometers east of the city of Ocosingo and is one of the largest and most spectacular Mayan sites in the region. Toniná was one of the most important political and religious centers of the Mayan culture, and its history spans from the late preclassic period to the postclassic period. The name "Toniná" means "stone wall" in the Tzotzil language, which was the language spoken in the region at the time the site was discovered. Toniná is a fortified city, surrounded by a stone wall with a height of up to 10 meters in some sections. It also has several buildings and structures that suggest that it was an important and prosperous city. Among the most notable structures in Toniná are the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Underworld, and the King's Palace. The Temple of the Sun is the tallest structure at the site, standing 75 meters tall, and is one of the tallest buildings in all of Mesoamerica. It is believed to have been built in the 6th century AD. and it was used for astronomical observation and religious rituals. The Temple of the Underworld is another important structure in Toniná. It is found in an underground area and it is believed that it was used for funeral and purification rituals. The King's Palace is an impressive structure with several rooms and patios that suggest it was used as a residence for the ruler of Toniná. Another notable feature of Toniná is the Ball Court, which is located in the center of the site. It is a Mesoamerican ball game court, where it is believed that important rituals and ceremonial games were carried out. Toniná is an impressive and well-preserved archaeological site, offering a fascinating insight into Mayan culture and their way of life. To visit Toniná, it can be reached through federal highway 199 from Ocosingo, and it is located about 12 kilometers east of the city. The site is open every day of the week, from 8 am to 5 pm. It is advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen, as the weather can be very hot and dry.
