The cypress is an evergreen tree of the Cupressaceae family. It is native to subtropical and warm regions of Asia, Europe and North America. The common cypress or Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is an arboreal species that can be very long-lived, with specimens that are more than 1000 years old.


The cypress is a tree that is used in natural medicine. In Greek medicine, cypress was used above all for its anti-hemorrhoidal properties. Now, other properties are attributed to it, such as improving blood circulation, relieving pain and taking care of the liver.

Popular medicine uses cypress to calm some symptoms of the common cold, reduce circulatory problems, minimize skin eruptions, among others. Cypress essential oil is obtained from the fresh leaves and galbules by distillation in two phases, and is used in aromatherapy for its pleasant tonic and camphoraceous aroma, as well as its decongestant properties and to stimulate pancreatic, hepatic and renal functions.
