Basketball

Basketball is another very popular sport in San Cristóbal de las Casas, especially among indigenous communities, who practice it as a form of recreation, integration and resistance. Basketball was introduced to the city in the 1930s, under the influence of American missionaries who arrived in the region. Since then, basketball has spread throughout the city and its surroundings, where numerous public and private courts have been built. Basketball tournaments are frequently held on neighborhood courts, schools, churches, and patron saint festivals. The level of competition is high and the matches are usually very close and exciting.
