A temple that dates from the 18th century and that keeps the image of the patron saint of the city
The San Cristobalito Church, also known as San Cristobalito, is one of the most emblematic attractions of San Cristóbal de las Casas, a colonial city located in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. It is a small temple that is located on top of the Cerrito de San Cristóbal, from where you can appreciate a beautiful panoramic view of the city and its surroundings.

A historical and religious treasure in the Cerrito de San Cristóbal

The temple was built by Fray Juan de Ordoñez at the end of the 18th century, as part of a missionary project that sought to evangelize the indigenous people of the region. The friar also founded the convent of Santo Domingo, which today houses the Museo de los Altos de Chiapas. Inside the church is the image of San Cristóbal Mártir, the patron saint of the city, which according to tradition was brought from Spain by the conquistador Diego de Mazariegos.

The church is an example of Baroque architecture, with a white façade and golden details. Inside you can admire oil paintings, altarpieces and religious sculptures. Outside the church there is a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, who is also highly revered by locals and visitors.

A party full of color and devotion every July 25

On July 25, the feast of the patron saint, San Cristóbal Mártir, is celebrated with great joy and fervor. The hill is lit up with rockets, music, food, visitors and the faithful who go up on foot or by vehicle to pay homage to the saint. Masses, processions, folk dances and other cultural activities are held. You can also enjoy typical cuisine, such as mole, pozol and tamales.

One of the most curious traditions is the blessing of the vehicles, which takes place in the atrium of the church. The owners decorate their cars, motorcycles, bicycles and even wheelbarrows with flowers, balloons and colored ribbons. Then they pass in front of the priest, who sprinkles holy water on them and hands them a small picture of the saint. This is believed to protect drivers and passengers from accidents and evil spirits.

The San Cristobalito Church is a place that you cannot miss if you go to San Cristóbal de las Casas. It is a place that will surprise you with its beauty, its history and its tradition. We invite you to meet him and live a unique and unforgettable experience.
