The Church of San Francisco  A colonial treasure in Chiapas

A temple with history and art

If you visit San Cristóbal de las Casas, one of the most beautiful magical towns in Mexico, you cannot miss the church of San Francisco, an architectural and cultural jewel dating from the 16th century.
The church of San Francisco was founded by the Franciscan friars in 1577, as part of a convent that was dedicated to the evangelization of the natives of the region. The original building was made of adobe and straw, but it was replaced by a stone and brick construction in the 18th century, with a sober and elegant baroque style.
The façade of the church is made up of three bodies with a belfry and two lateral towers, which contrast with the reddish color of the roofs. Inside, you can see a single nave covered with a wooden and tile roof, which houses six golden altarpieces of great beauty and artistic value.

The altarpieces are in the Baroque Solomonic and stipe style, and contain good quality oil paintings, representing scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Franciscan saints, such as Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Clare. In addition, in the upper part of the nave there is a collection of 14 canvases showing images of angels and archangels.
The church of San Francisco is a place full of history and art, which reflects the cultural and religious richness of Chiapas. It is a site that you cannot miss if you want to learn more about the colonial past and the Franciscan legacy in this southern Mexican state. We invite you to visit it and admire its beauty and charm.
