The Church of Guadalupe
A historical and religious treasure in San Cristóbal de las Casas
This church, built in the 19th century, houses an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and offers a panoramic view of the city.
San Cristóbal de las Casas is a city full of charm, culture and history. Among its many attractions is the church of Guadalupe, located in the neighborhood of the same name, which is distinguished by its architecture and religious significance.
The church was built in 1834 on top of Cerro de Guadalupe, which surrounds the old Ciudad Real. To reach it, you must climb 79 steps, which represent the years that the Virgin Mary lived according to Catholic tradition. From there you can appreciate a spectacular view of the city and its surroundings.
The church has a single nave with a side chapel, where a canvas of the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated, donated by the dean of the Cathedral, Don Lino García, in 1850. The image is very dear to the inhabitants of the neighborhood and of the whole city, who celebrate their festival on December 12 with masses, processions and dances.
The church is also of historical importance, as it was the scene of violent confrontations during the so-called anti-reelection struggle in 1866. In addition, its architecture was improved between 1854 and 1864 by Bishop Carlos María Colina y Rubio, who received the decoration of Commander of the Order. of Guadalupe by President Santa Ana.
The Guadalupe church is a place worth visiting if you want to learn more about the history, faith, and beauty of San Cristóbal de las Casas. It is a treasure that keeps the memory of a glorious past and the love of a devoted people.
