This construction, unique in Mexico, is considered part of the Chiapaneco Mudéjar sample collection due to its square floor plan with massive proportions, its ornamental applications in mortar and the octagonal wooden vault with an eight-pointed star, reminiscent of Islamic art paneling.

La Merced y el Museo del Ambar

The Church of La Merced was the first convent and church founded after the initiative of four Mercedarian friars from Guatemala in 1537. The simplicity of its architecture is due to the little influence that this order had on the religious and civil life of the province. The interior of the sacristy preserves the original construction of a semicircular arch and a continuous barrel vault. In the 18th century, the main altarpiece and the sides were built, as well as the upper and lower choir.

El parque de San Ramon

The San Ramón neighborhood was formed by the donation of land made by Don Ramón Larrainzar in 1849, when he was interim governor of the State of Chiapas, due to pressure from the impoverished inhabitants of the city, mainly from the La Merced neighborhood, and due to rumors of a feared indigenous uprising due to the dispossession they were suffering of their most fertile lands.
