In the convent of La Encarnaciòn of Conceptionist nuns, the only convent for nuns in Ciudad Real, built in 1597, instruction was given on the feminine arts of the time. Its Construction was authorized by Felipe II by Royal Decree on November 30, 1595

The hospital, the asylum, the girls' school and arts and crafts workshops, the Institute of Sciences and Arts, the barracks and a Masonic temple were established in the place. When the Conceptionist nuns abandoned the city, the cult of the Ministry of the Incarnation ended, and that of Our Lady of Mount Carmel prevailed.

In 1980, the ex-convent of La Encarnación, today a house of culture, was restored. The cloister is located in a square, free from the temple. The main façade is sober. Inside it preserves its original architectural party.

This building represents the last vestige of the convent of the Encarnación de la Ciudad Real, currently restored by FONATUR, since the world tourism summit was held here. Currently we can enjoy the cloister, with its central patio, and the convention center is housed in the back. Within its spaces it also has a garden of epitites, and workshops for children and the elderly.
Just 3 blocks from Plaza 31 de Marzo, on Av. Hidalgo, is this majestic cultural architectural complex made up of a series of old and modern buildings, among which are: the Fine Arts building, the Public Library and the Convention Center.

Its bell tower, the El Carmen tower, is a distinctive sign of the city.

El Chorreadero

El Chorreadero

Body

Chiapas is a state of Mexico that offers a wide variety of tourist attractions, from archaeological zones to magical towns, passing through national parks and ecological reserves. However, one of the most impressive and least known places is the El Chorreadero Waterfall, an underground river that emerges from a cave and cascades down, forming a series of natural pools framed by jungle vegetation.

El Chorreadero is located 24 km from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the state capital, and 14 km from Chiapa de Corzo, a colonial city that is also worth visiting. To get to Chorreadero, you must take the free highway to San Cristóbal de las Casas (federal 190) until it begins, on the left, a dirt road that runs 1 km to the parking lot of the site.
Visiting hours are from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon, and the entrance fee is 20 pesos per person. The climate in the area is sub-humid with rain in summer and has an average annual temperature of 25ºC and a rainfall of 990 mm.

El Chorreadero is an ideal place for lovers of nature and adventure, as it offers various activities to enjoy the landscape and biodiversity. You can practice swimming in the pools of crystalline water, rappelling on the rocky walls, zip-lining over the river, hiking along the ecological trails and speleology in the cavern through which the underground river flows.

During the dry season, from November to March, it is possible to take an exciting tour along the cavern, since its channel is very gentle. Inside it is possible to find small waterfalls and pools of great beauty. If you want to go on this expedition and live this adventure, it is recommended to contact a local guide or specialized agency that provides the necessary equipment and security. The entire tour takes about 12 hours.
The vegetation of the Chorreadero is medium jungle; You can see trees like the muju, the amate and the fig. The fauna is varied and you can see animals such as the rattlesnake, the opossum, the bobcat and the squirrel.

El Chorreadero is a place that combines natural beauty with local culture, since in its surroundings you can find indigenous communities that preserve their traditions and customs. You can also taste typical dishes of the region, such as baked pork, Chiapas tamale and pozol.

If you want to complement your visit to Chorreadero with other tourist attractions in Chiapas, you can take the opportunity to get to know Chiapa de Corzo, a city founded in 1528 that has a rich historical and cultural heritage. There you can admire monuments such as the Santo Domingo Temple, the Ex-Franciscan Convent and the Colonial Fountain. In addition, from Chiapa de Corzo you can take the river route through the Sumidero Canyon, one of the most important canyons in the world for its ecological richness.

Another option is to visit San Cristóbal de las Casas, one of the most emblematic magical towns in Mexico. San Cristóbal is a colonial city that preserves its architecture and its bohemian atmosphere. There you can visit places like the Cathedral, the Santo Domingo Temple, the Amber Museum and the Municipal Market. You can also enjoy its gastronomy, its crafts and its nightlife.
Chiapas is a state that has a lot to offer to the tourist who seeks to know its nature, its culture and its history. El Chorreadero is one of those places that you should not miss if you want to live a unique and unforgettable experience.

Cañon del Sumidero

Cañon del Sumidero

Body

Cañón del Sumidero Park is one of the most impressive and emblematic destinations in Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico. It is a narrow and deep canyon formed by a geological fault some 12 million years ago, through which the Grijalva River flows, which originates in the mountains of Guatemala and flows into the Gulf of Mexico.

The canyon is about 35 km long and has a maximum height of more than 1,300 m, making it a natural spectacle of great beauty and majesty. Its rocky walls are home to a rich biodiversity, with more than 1,000 species of plants and animals, some of them endemic or in danger of extinction.

The park was declared as such in 1980, in order to protect and conserve this natural and cultural heritage of Chiapas and Mexico. In addition, in 2004 it was recognized as a Ramsar site, an international agreement that seeks to preserve the most important wetlands in the world.

The park offers various options to enjoy its landscapes and its fauna, from panoramic viewpoints to boat tours on the river. It also has an ecotourism complex that offers recreational and educational activities for the whole family.

How to get to the Sumidero Canyon Park

The park is located about 5 km from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of Chiapas, and about 15 km from Chiapa de Corzo, the oldest colonial city in the state. Both cities have public and private transportation services to get to the park.

The most comfortable and usual way to get there is by car or bus, taking the road that goes from Tuxtla Gutiérrez to the viewpoints of the canyon. There are five viewpoints in total, each one with a different and spectacular view of the canyon. The most famous is the Mirador La Ceiba, where you can appreciate the rock formation known as El Arbol de Navidad, a natural waterfall that is shaped like a pine tree.

Another alternative, the most adventurous and exciting, is to arrive by boat on the Grijalva River. You can set sail from the piers on the banks of Cahuaré or from the city of Chiapa de Corzo. The tour lasts about two and a half hours, and allows you to admire the canyon from below, as well as observe some animal species such as crocodiles, spider monkeys, herons, and pelicans. In addition, you can visit the cave where the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron saint of Mexico, is located.

What to do in the Sumidero Canyon Park

In addition to contemplating the beauty of the canyon from the viewpoints or from the river, the park offers other activities to enjoy nature and learn about its history and culture.

One option is to visit the ecotourism complex that is located in front of the Manuel Moreno Torres hydroelectric dam, popularly known as Presa Chicoasén. This complex has ecological trails, green areas, playgrounds, an interactive museum, a planetarium and a butterfly garden.

Another option is to practice some extreme sport such as rappelling, zip-lining or kayaking in the river. These activities can be contracted with a specialized agency or with the local guides that are in the park.

You can also take advantage of the visit to the park to get to know Chiapa de Corzo, a city full of history and tradition. Here you can admire its colonial architecture, its famous Mudejar fountain and its former Dominican convent. In addition, you can taste its typical gastronomy, such as baked pork, pozol and artisan ice cream.

Why visit the Sumidero Canyon Park

The Cañón del Sumidero Park is a place that cannot be missed if you travel to Chiapas, since it is one of the most impressive natural wonders of Mexico and the world. Its scenic beauty, its ecological wealth and its cultural value make it a unique and unforgettable destination.

In addition, the park is a symbol of identity and pride for the people of Chiapas, who consider it part of their shield and their history. In fact, the canyon was the scene of a heroic feat in 1524, when the indigenous people of Chiapas jumped from its walls to avoid being subdued by the Spanish conquerors.

Visiting the park is also a way of supporting its conservation and sustainable development, since it is a fragile ecosystem threatened by pollution, deforestation and climate change. For this reason, it is recommended to follow the rules and recommendations of the park, such as not littering, not feeding the animals and respecting restricted areas.

The Cañón del Sumidero Park is, without a doubt, a place that must be visited and admired at least once in a lifetime. It is an experience that fills with wonder and gratitude for nature and for life.

The arcotete is a natural rock formation located 4 km northwest of San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the state of Chiapas. Its name means "stone arch" and is due to the legend that the French soldier Jean Francoise D' Arcotete took his life when he was rejected by a ponytailed woman with whom he was in love.
This arch is the result of millions of years of erosion by the Fogotic River, which passes beneath it. Its beauty is due to the passage of time, which has revealed impressive caverns in the roof of the arch. El arcotete is an ideal place for lovers of nature and adventure. Here you can practice various activities such as rock climbing, rappelling, mountain biking, photography and caving. Chiapa de Corzo

Chiapa de Corzo

Body

Chiapa de Corzo is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the state of Chiapas, located just 15 minutes from the capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Its value lies in its rich history, which dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when it was inhabited by various indigenous groups, including the Chiapanecas, who fiercely resisted the Spanish conquest and preferred to commit suicide rather than be dominated. His legacy can be appreciated in the ruins of the San Sebastián temple and in the archaeological site of Chiapa de Corzo, where vestiges of the Olmec, Mayan and Izapa cultures have been found.

The city also preserves its colonial heritage, which is reflected in its religious, civil and military buildings, such as the Santo Domingo temple and convent, the municipal palace, the house of Don Ángel Albino Corzo and the fountain or stack, a masterpiece of Mudejar art, unique in Latin America. The main square is the center of the social and cultural life of the city, where the Ceiba or Pochota is located, a sacred tree that symbolizes the founding of the city, and the clock tower, which imitates the style of the fountain.

Chiapa de Corzo is also famous for its big festival, which is celebrated every year from January 4 to 23, in honor of the Lord of Esquipulas, San Antonio Abad and San Sebastián Mártir. During this festival, the dance of the parachicos is performed, a folkloric expression that combines pre-Hispanic and Catholic elements, and which was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2010. The parachicos are dancers who wear wooden masks carved by artisans locals, colored sarapes and tin rattles called chinchines. They walk the streets to the rhythm of the marimba and the drummer, singing improvised verses and making fun of the deadly sins. The dance has its origin in a legend that tells how a mother was looking for a remedy for her sick son "for the boy", a phrase that over time became "parachico".

The gastronomy of Chiapa de Corzo is another attraction for visitors, who can taste typical dishes such as baked pork, chipilín broth, Chiapas tamales and regional sweets such as suspiros, chimbos and nuegados. The traditional drink is pozol, a mixture of cooked corn and ground cocoa that is drunk hot or cold. The local crafts also stand out for their quality and variety, especially lacquer, wood carving and embroidery that adorn regional costumes.

Chiapa de Corzo is a city that invites you to discover its history, its culture and its tradition, through its monuments, its festivals, its gastronomy and its crafts. It is a city that preserves its Chiapas identity and offers its visitors a unique and unforgettable experience.
