Copainalá

This charming town of Zoque origin offers a unique experience of nature, culture and history.

Copainalá is one of the recently named Magical Towns of Mexico, and it is no wonder. This town, located in the northwest of the state of Chiapas, has a lot to offer travelers looking for an authentic and charming destination.

Its name comes from the Nahuatl coa-painal-lan, which means “place of the snakes that ran.” According to tradition, this was the birthplace of the parents of Malintzin or Malinche, the famous interpreter of Hernán Cortés during the conquest of Mexico.

The pre-Hispanic name of Comitán was Balún Canán, which means: “Place of the nine stars”. The old town was founded in a swamp by a large group of indigenous Tzeltals. In 1486 it was subdued by the Aztecs who named it Comitán, from the Nahuatl komitl-tlán and which means: “Place of fevers”.

Founded in 1528 by the Spanish conquistador Diego de Mazariegos, it was the first capital of the state until 1892, when the powers were transferred to Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Since then, San Cristóbal has preserved its colonial charm, its ethnic diversity and its cultural richness, which make it a unique and fascinating tourist destination.
