In the convent of La Encarnaciòn of Conceptionist nuns, the only convent for nuns in Ciudad Real, built in 1597, instruction was given on the feminine arts of the time. Its Construction was authorized by Felipe II by Royal Decree on November 30, 1595.

The hospital, the asylum, the girls' school and arts and crafts workshops, the Institute of Sciences and Arts, the barracks and a Masonic temple were established in the place. When the Conceptionist nuns abandoned the city, the cult of the Ministry of the Incarnation ended, and that of Our Lady of Mount Carmel prevailed.

The pre-Hispanic name of Comitán was Balún Canán, which means: “Place of the nine stars”. The old town was founded in a swamp by a large group of indigenous Tzeltals. In 1486 it was subdued by the Aztecs who named it Comitán, from the Nahuatl komitl-tlán and which means: “Place of fevers”.

Founded in 1528 by the Spanish conquistador Diego de Mazariegos, it was the first capital of the state until 1892, when the powers were transferred to Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Since then, San Cristóbal has preserved its colonial charm, its ethnic diversity and its cultural richness, which make it a unique and fascinating tourist destination.

La Merced

The Church of La Merced was the first convent and church founded after the initiative of four Mercedarian friars from Guatemala in 1537. The convent of La Merced was built in 1537, when Francisco Marroquin brought four Mercedarians, two of which: Fray Pedro Barrientos and Fray Pedro Benítez de Lugo, stayed in this Ciudad Real, to start the foundation of the order. The other Mercedarians: Fray Juan Zambrano and Fray Marcos Pérez Dardón, did not stay long in the city, leaving the convent even though the City Council had already granted a plot of land on March 18, 1537.

San Cristóbal de las Casas is a colonial city with almost 500 years of history, which is reflected in its religious and civil buildings. Among them, the church of San Nicolás stands out, one of the oldest and most representative of the colonial religious architecture of Chiapas.
